Tastes of wine mostly depend on grape-growing areas, namely, the natural features of the areas. However, terroir in French means not only soil, climate, and growing system but also people's enthusiasm for viticulture. Producing areas of Château Mercian with worldwide reputation, specifically, Jyonohira, Kikyogahara, Hokushin, Niitsuru, and Toriibira have their own terroir. That is exactly Japanese terroir, because it is composed of the natural conditions of the area, the earnest efforts of the people who are involved in grape growing, and innovative viticultural techniques of Mercian Katsunuma Winery. We believe that all starts from growing exceptional grapes with distinctive characters of each terroir.
