This area is highly regarded for producing best Koshu, a grape variety for white wine grown in Japan from old times. The altitude is 500 ` 600m. Since it is located in highlands of Katsunuma, the temperature largely varies between day and night, and the vineyards on the southern slopes are favored by much sunshine.
The soil mainly consists of clay-loam but contains some gravel, so the drainage is relatively good. These favorable conditions make it possible to produce small berries grapes with high concentration of sugar and acidity. Château Mercian Koshu Toriibira, vinified only from the late-harvested grapes with high sugar content, makes quality sweet wine of complex taste.

Koshu is a productive grape variety to be harvested as much as 30t per 1ha when no cluster thinning . However, in order to produce high-potential grapes for Château Mercian Koshu Toriibira, we have reduced the yields. Also, we have made various experiments, pursuing new possibility; for instance, we put umbrellas against autumn rain at some vineyards. Koshu, grape variety indigenous to Japan, is indispensable for making Japanese terroir known to wine lovers all over the world. We hope Château Mercian Koshu Toriibira will become new standard of Koshu wine.
