Château Mercian Mariko Winery

Château Mercian Mariko Winery

We want to make Japan one of the world's great wine regions, and also have Japanese wine known and loved by people all over the world. To bring this dream to life, Château Mercian committed to growing its own high-quality grapes. Our search for a large area of land eventually brought us to the Jinba plateau in the Mariko area of Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. Support from Ueda City and the local community allowed us to open the Mariko Vineyard in 2003. It grew and developed to the point where the vines were producing grapes responsible for internationally acclaimed wines, leading to the opening of the Château Mercian Mariko Winery in September 2019.

Origin of the name “Mariko”

The vineyard was named “Mariko Vineyard” based on the history telling that this area was territory of Mariko no Miko, son of Kinmei Emperor in the late 6th century.

Tank room

Grapes brought to the reception area are gravity fed through rails on the ceiling into tanks. Each tank in the Mariko Winery contains a different grape variety, further subdivided by area and method of cultivation to bring out the distinctive characteristics of the area.

Cellar

Two barrel rooms at different temperatures ensure perfect maturation for all wines.

Main hall

A large window lets you look over the winemaking area and cellar. The hall is decorated with Japanese-style paintings illustrating the philosophy of Château Mercian, using symbols created from the icons of our three wineries.
